Los Angeles Lakers: Dwight Howard could start at center during 2021-22 season

The Lakers were certainly happy to sign Dwight Howard in free agency for what will be his third stint with the franchise. Of course, Howard played a key role for Los Angeles in their 2020 title run, and it seemed like they missed his presence at center all of last season. With the big man back in the mix, he will get some consideration to receive the starting nod.

Since he has already played with the Lakers recently, everyone knows what Howard brings to the table. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year brings a much-needed presence down low that is formidable as ever for opponents driving inside. He will get his share of blocks at the hoop, and the Lakers will need that. Rebounding is also another strong suit for Howard, as he is capable of snatching double-digit boards nightly. Offensively, he poses the same problem as Jordan with his nonexistent outside shot. That could be an issue with Westbrook, but once again, it does not mean the two cannot co-exist completely, contrary to popular belief.

Howard would be a reasonable option to start for the Lakers next season. He is already familiar with the system and several of LA’s key players, and it will essentially be like he never left. It will be interesting to see how he meshes with Westbrook, but if the team wants a true center to start, then Howard should be their man. Bringing Howard back was a solid move for Los Angeles, but time will tell if he sees a much bigger role this time around with another championship in mind.
