Boston Celtics: 3 burning questions the Celtics must answer in 2021-22
By Dan Bennett
The Boston Celtics significantly underwhelmed last season.
In what was supposed to be a year that saw the team build on its Eastern Conference Finals appearance in the Orlando Bubble, the Celtics instead battled with injury problems and failed to build any momentum throughout the season before crashing out in the first round of the playoffs to the Brooklyn Nets.
It wasn’t one single issue to blame for the Celtics’ demise last season, more a collection of individual factors which contributed to a hugely disappointing year. With two supreme talents in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the roster, a title challenge should be the aim going into the new season.
And with that in mind, the Celtics made huge changes in the summer. Head coach Brad Stevens moved into a new role as president of basketball operations, with Ime Udoka taking over Stevens’ previous job.
When it came to reshuffling the roster, Stevens did not wait to make the big decisions. Kemba Walker was instantly traded away, while Evan Fournier, Tristan Thompson and Semi Ojeleye also departed. Notable arrivals included Dennis Schroder, Al Horford, Josh Richardson and Enes Kanter.
The Boston Celtics must address some key areas of weakness from last year if they are to do enough to challenge for the NBA Championship once again.
But after such a disheartening year, the Celtics have a lot to prove next season if they are to be true title challengers. The Eastern Conference is looking extremely strong, with a healthy Brooklyn Nets, buoyant Milwaukee Bucks, strengthened Miami Heat, strong Philadelphia 76ers and hopeful Atlanta Hawks all harbouring hopes of a title run.
Here are three of the biggest questions the Celtics must answer to mount a proper challenge for the title.
