Chicago Bulls: Grading their moves in NBA free agency
Chicago Bulls free agency signing No. 5: Lonzo Ball
Originally the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Lonzo Ball never really achieved the heights that were promised. Ball was sent to the New Orleans Pelicans along with a swag of other players for the Lakers to acquire superstar Anthony Davis.
Ball, who is a perennial triple-double threat never really captured the minds or hearts of the New Orleans Pelicans coaching staff or fans. This is due to the same season he arrived, future superstar, Zion Williamson was taken with the No. 1 pick of that draft. This meant that expectations of the Pelicans were huge and Williamson’s injury stopped all that.
What Ball needs is a system that suits him where there is more than one elite scorer on the court. He can then use his reasonably unique skillset to facilitate and score the basketball when the opportunity presents itself. Ball also is able to head into the paint in order to compete for the rebound.
This signing feels right given the system that he is going into allows for Ball to create for others, and defend at a high level. This will benefit the Bulls greatly and given that he is signed for the next four seasons, this signing could be remembered as one of the best of this free agency.
Grade: A+
