Chicago Bulls: Grading their moves in NBA free agency
Chicago Bulls free agency signing No. 4: Derrick Jones Jr.
Derrick Jones Jr. is going to be on his fourth team in five seasons in the league. He signed on with the Portland Trail Blazers last season and was part of their starting unit prior to an injury. He was used alongside Robert Covington in an effort to improve the Trail Blazers’ defense.
Jones is an ultra-athletic player who has an astonishing vertical leap. He also has some good lateral movement meaning that at 6’5″ he can defend multiple positions. In a positionless league like we have now this is a priceless skill.
He can also finish around the rim thanks to his incredible leaping ability. All that you have to do is put the ball within reach of Jones and he will finish the play almost every time. He is improving his shooting from deep but is only a career 29.4 percent shooter from long distance.
It is unlikely that Jones is going to start for the Bulls, they have too many quality players who play the same position. These include their current star LaVine as well as the newly signed DeMar DeRozan meaning that Jones will be a solid member of the reserve unit.
Grade: B+
