Los Angeles Lakers: 3 bold predictions for the 2021-22 season
Lakers prediction No. 2: Nobody challenges for the MVP award
I don’t think there is anybody that actually believes that LeBron James and Anthony Davis could challenge for the MVP award if they really cared for it. They are two of the best players of this century and have quickly become an all-time great duo.
But the thing is, with LeBron being nearly 37 years of age and AD being as fragile as a house of cards, they would be pushing it if they made it their top priority this season. Both are certified champions with nearly nothing left to prove and are correctly acting responsibly in that matter.
That just leaves Russell Westbrook amongst us. Russell’s numbers this season were nothing short of spectacular. Some advocate that he would be in the running for it, had the Washington Wizards been at least a mediocre team, but that wasn’t the case.
He led the league in assists by a landslide and ended the season as the league’s 6th best rebounder. All that from your point guard.
How well he is going to gel with LeBron remains unanswered, as the pair share more similarities than discrepancies. However, one thing we can say with certainty, is that Westbrook will not be averaging his usual triple-double while playing on The King’s side.
Knowing LeBron’s style of play, there is a high chance that we see him adopt a more altruistic playstyle this season, in order to help Russ get acclimated even sooner. Regardless of that, MVP-type numbers should and will not be expected from Westbrook.
