Los Angeles Lakers: Predicting statistical leaders in all major categories
By Duncan Smith
The Los Angeles Lakers had one of the most disappointing ends to a season in recent history thanks in large part to LeBron James and Anthony Davis missing extensive time due to injuries.
They had to battle their way into the NBA playoffs via the play-in tournament, and their reward was a quick first-round defeat at the hands of the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers will have high hopes to not just improve upon this poor showing, but challenge for a championship as well.
To do this, they’ll need great performances from their best players, but how will those performances be measured statistically? We’ll take a look in the crystal ball and try to project the statistical output for the following categories: Scoring, rebounds, assists, stocks (steals plus blocks), 2-point shooting, 3-point shooting and free-throw shooting.
We’ll start with scoring, and it should be no surprise who gets the nod for this honor.
Los Angeles Lakers statistical leaders: Scoring – LeBron James
Predicted average: 25.0
The Los Angeles Lakers had plenty of roster turnover this offseason, but LeBron James remains a true constant as one of the greatest scorers in the history of the NBA. Even in what will be his age-38 season, James should be formidable once again.
One of the biggest benefits to bringing Russell Westbrook on board is that James can afford to miss a few games here and there if needed or defer to Westbrook as the primary ball-handler. This combination will allow him to retain his energy and make it easier for him to score at a high level throughout the season.
