Grading Pistons free-agency moves: The newcomers

Kelly Olynyk

Kelly Olynyk bounced from the Miami Heat to the woebegone Houston Rockets at the NBA trade deadline and proceeded to set the world on fire. Of course, his stats were of the good-numbers-bad-team variety and must be taken with a grain of salt, but he was REALLY good in Houston and was compensated for it in Detroit. Olynyk signed a three-year, $37.195 million deal with the Pistons (the third year partially guaranteed) and it shouldn’t be hard for him to exceed the value of this number while playing alongside Cade Cunningham and Jerami Grant.

Grade: B

Trey Lyles

Trey Lyles signed a two-year, $5.125 million deal (the second year is a team option) with the Pistons, and sure? I guess? Lyles will provide competition for Sekou Doumbouya and potentially replace him in the rotation if Doumbouya falls short, but Lyles doesn’t move the needle much at all. I don’t really care about Lyles’ reported dislike for the city of Detroit, it just doesn’t seem like Lyles jumps off the page in any way or for any reason.

Grade: D+
