Houston Rockets award candidates: Kevin Porter Jr. – Most Improved Player

I have a very strong feeling that either Christian Wood or Kevin Porter Jr. will be one of the finalists for the 2021 Most Improved Player award. If I had to choose one, it would be KPJ.

KPJ is the definition of a bucket getter. He’s going to go out every night, shoot the skin off the ball, and score on opposing teams. What generally wins the MIP is a sharp increase in scoring which we will absolutely see from him this season. In his second year and first full season in the Rockets organization, he’ll be the focus.

After he never really got a chance in Cleveland and forced his way out, the Rockets took a chance and brought him in. Boy did it pay off. KPJ showed us flashes of the player he could be in the 50-point game against the Milwaukee Bucks and that’s just his scoring. He’s got plenty of time to become a better passer and we could see him take a jump as a playmaker this season.

This probably isn’t a surprise to anybody who actually watches the Houston Rockets because they know who KPJ is and they’ve seen the talent first hand. He was electric in high school and took a little bit of a step back in college but from the looks of it, he’s taken the NBA by storm. If he’s continuously able to improve on a yearly basis, he could be the second player in NBA history to win the Most Improved Player award and an MVP.
