San Antonio Spurs NBA free agency signing No. 5: Chandler Hutchison

The Spurs got in on the Russell Westbrook trade by sending  Nikola Milutinov to the Brooklyn Nets and a 2022 second-round pick to the Washington Wizards. In return, they received the three-year small forward, Chandler Hutchison.

This is the third home for Hutchison in just the past two seasons. He was traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Wizards at the deadline as the Bulls tried to speed up their rebuild last season. He only played a short time with the Wizards where he was solid without being spectacular.

Hutchison is not a great floor-spacer, being a 30.9 percent shooter from beyond the arc. He also only takes 1.1 attempts from distance per game for his career. This could fit with the Spurs game plan as they only have a few long-distance shooters on their roster, preferring to do the work inside the arc.

Hutchison has never been an impact player in his time within the NBA. He has had three different coaches in three seasons and now he is about to start his fourth, he will now be mentored by Gregg Popovich. The coaching legend should be able to get the most out of Hutchison and even if he can’t, the small forward is in the final season of his rookie deal.
