San Antonio Spurs NBA free agency signing No. 4: Doug McDermott

Doug McDermott was a sign and trade with the Indiana Pacers but was the only player involved. The Spurs received two future second-round picks along with McDermott and only had to give up a future second-round pick to get him.

It appears that McDermott wanted to get a decent salary this season and the Pacers did not have the ability to pay him what he wanted. The Spurs’ needs are abundantly clear. Losing Rudy Gay to the Utah Jazz and Mills to the Brooklyn Nets, the bench shooting stocks are very low.

Thankfully the Spurs replace Mills with Forbes and the Gay role has now been filled with McDermott who is an elite perimeter player. He has connected with 40.7 percent of his career 3-point attempts, which will certainly help the Spurs floor spacing.

The Spurs have McDermott locked in for three seasons at a reasonable salary of $13.7 million per year. While McDermott is not going to win you a championship, he is a known entity that Popovich can build around in the second unit. If the Spurs are going to challenge for playoffs again soon, players like McDermott will help.
