The San Antonio Spurs have had their second disappointing season in a row. For the second time in the Gregg Popovich era, they have missed the playoffs. To add to that they have also lost their best player in DeMar DeRozan via sign and trade.

For the perennial playoff participant, the Spurs are trying to rebuild without falling to the bottom of the standings and this is not an easy road to take. They did well to get a return for DeRozan but what they got was not enough to help them contend.

The Spurs were once a tremendous destination for free agents but they have struggled to sign many in the past few seasons. In fact, the Spurs have lost free agents over the past few seasons which is not a good sign for a franchise that appears to be going nowhere at the moment. Losing the experience of Patty Mills is not great on that front.

San Antonio Spurs NBA free agency signing No. 1: Bryn Forbes

During the 2020-21 offseason, the Spurs lost Bryn Forbes to the Milwaukee Bucks. Forbes is a knockdown 3-point shooter who helped space the floor for last season’s champions. However, the Spurs signed Forbes this free agency period which would have been a relief.

With the loss of Mills, the Spurs needed a true perimeter threat and they were able to fulfill that need with the Forbes signing. The positive for the Spurs is that Forbes knows the systems already and will fit into the offense smoothly. However, he still struggles on the defensive end of the floor.
