NBA free agency biggest steals: 2. Lonzo Ball

Lonzo Ball‘s four-year, $85 million contract isn’t exactly cheap, and might not seem like a steal, but the Chicago Bulls got great value for the young point guard.

The 23-year-old made some important steps forward last season. He has always been a talented playmaker that puts the team first, but his role as a shooter and scorer grew significantly in his final year with the New Orleans Pelicans. Ball shot 37.8 percent from three on 8.3 attempts per game and averaged a career-high 14.6 points per game.

There is still a significant upside to Ball’s game. His first four years in the league have been far from straightforward, having played for two separate franchises in not ideal situations. The chance to become settled on a team with plenty of offensive talent around him in Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic will no doubt benefit his career.

And for Chicago, it gives them an accomplished playmaker to run an offense full of scorers. He can also contribute on the defensive end of the court on a team that does not have a ton of quality defenders on the roster.

If Ball continues on his upward trajectory, there’s a huge chance he could outperform the value of his contract over the next few years. Chicago added a hugely talented, high-potential guard who has shown he can continue to get better.
