Where the Pistons stand in NBA free agency: What about their current free agents?

NBA free agency isn’t all about getting new players. It’s also about coming to agreements with your own players, and the Pistons have some outstanding business to conduct with their own free agents.

As things currently stand, Dennis Smith Jr. is an unrestricted free agent and will likely not return to Detroit, and Hamidou Diallo, Frank Jackson and Saben Lee are all restricted free agents, which means the Pistons can retain each of them simply by matching any other team’s offer sheet. In an offseason where not many teams had cap space (and fewer have space now, several days into free agency), that’s advantageous for the team holding those restricted rights.

Everything could change in a flash, but we’ll expect to see the Pistons retain each of the restricted free agents. In addition, the Pistons may have up to as much as $4.9 million in remaining available space, depending on how they choose to structure their existing free agency signings.

It’s also conceivable that they may use that space (if it even exists) to facilitate multi-team deals, like one that could help move Spencer Dinwiddie from the Brooklyn Nets to the Washington Wizards.
