Milwaukee Bucks offseason move No. 2: Have Bobby Portis opt-in

When the Bucks signed Bobby Portis, they would have no idea the role that he would play in getting them to the Finals, let alone helping them win a championship. Portis signed a two-year deal at the start of the season, with the second year being a player option.

He averaged 11.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.8 steals in 20.8 minutes per game for the season. However, these numbers tell half the story, his efficiency was off the charts, going at 52.3 percent from the floor and 47.1 percent from beyond the arc.

However, no playoff run is complete without a story and Portis played a huge part in the Bucks narrative. He did not play at the end of the Brooklyn Nets series before being a difference-maker in the Atlanta Hawks series. When the team’s superstar Giannis Antetokounpo went down with a knee injury, the Hawks simply had no answer for Portis.

Without him, we would not have seen Antetokounmpo take control of the finals series because the Bucks would not have been there. That was the strength of Portis’ performance. The Bucks need to keep him if they want to repeat next year. The biggest issue is that he is only on $3.8 million next season and with the cap space available, may want to maximize his payday.
