Atlanta Hawks offseason move No. 2: Extend Kevin Huerter

Every team needs to have a glue guy. They need to have a player who gives the team what it needs when it needs it. Sometimes players can have off nights and that is acceptable, especially when there is a player like Kevin Huerter to pick up the slack.

Given that he plays like this, which is very similar to the career that his current coach played, Huerter is never going to dominate the box score each and every night. As shown during the playoffs, the team needs Huerter to be producing for them to be successful.

Trae Young had an off night in the last game of their Eastern Conference semi-finals series against the Philadelphia 76ers. Huerter scored 27 points on the night, keeping the Hawks in it until Young hit his stride in the final period. Then, during the Bucks series, they kept Huerter in check and the Hawks were not able to get past them.

Huerter was asked to play many roles this season given the injury issues suffered by the Hawks and he did them well. While there are question marks about how many of the Hawks players will receive extensions, Huerter’s name should not be on that list. He is too important to the franchise’s success to not give him an extension.
