Phoenix Suns: 5 offseason roster moves they need to make
Phoenix Suns offseason move No. 5: Renegotiate Chris Paul’s deal.
When Chris Paul joined the Phoenix Suns he bought his trademark mentoring to a young team that was crying out for veteran leadership. It was a match made in heaven and as a result, the team made the Finals for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
After the time he spent with the Houston Rockets, it seemed unlikely that Paul, given his advancing age, would ever play in an NBA Finals, at least not as a significant contributor. However, it was here that he signed the four-year, maximum salary deal, with the fourth year as a player option.
He appeared to be a spent force but thanks to the OKC Thunder trading Russell Westbrook to the Rockets for Paul, he was able to have a renaissance season. Once this was over, the Thunder went into rebuild mode and traded Paul to the Suns where he led the team with a sure hand.
Now that he is in the final season of that contract, he has indicated that he may opt out. If the Suns can lock him up for a further two years on around $20.0 million a season, they have a chance of keeping the core of this team together for another couple of years. This means that they will be perennial contenders for this time.
Paul has a desire to win a championship which is burning so much brighter the longer into his career that he gets. This team currently gives him the best opportunity that he has ever had and he needs to take it with both hands.
