Phoenix Suns offseason move No. 4: Sign a backup big

We will never know how the Finals would have ended if the Suns had all their key players healthy. Dario Saric went down within two minutes of taking the court in the first game of the Finals. This meant that the Suns had to use Frank Kaminsky as their backup big.

This weakened the second unit which had a negative impact on the result of the series. Players like Cameron Payne, who had been so good in the series against the LA Clippers seemed to disappear in the Finals. Without a meaningful contribution on a regular basis from the bench, the Suns did not have much chance.

Unfortunately for the Suns they still have Saric’s $9.0 million on the books for next season meaning they have limited wiggle room to pay his replacement. Given how close the Suns were to winning the championship, they should have no worries getting a veteran to sign on at the minimum.

Due to his lack of defense, it is unlikely that they will use Kaminsky as their preferred bench option for next year if they decide to re-sign him. If they could get a defensive stopper like Nerlens Noel whose role is going to decrease with the New York Knicks then the Suns would potentially be close to being the favorites for next season.
