LA Clippers offseason move No. 5: Renegotiate Kawhi Leonard’s terms.

To put it simply, Kawhi Leonard is one of the best basketball players on the planet. As such, his signature is one of the most sought after during free agency. The Clippers currently hold the cards here as they made the Western Conference Finals with Leonard and Ibaka injured.

There is a possibility that Leonard could decline his player option with $36 million. If he does this, the Clippers would like to extend his deal as long as they can. To date, Leonard has not expressed a desire to play anywhere else so there is very little risk to this strategy for the Clippers

If Leonard is able to return next season then this is going to make the Clippers a very dangerous team, no matter where they are positioned in the standings. They are good enough without Leonard to be a playoff team. When he comes back he will be the icing on the cake.

If the Clippers can sign him to a four or five-year deal, then this will keep him with the franchise until the end of George’s contract. This will keep the Clippers at the top of the standings for this period of time which will hopefully net them a championship.
