2018 NBA draft: Re-grading Pick Number 5. Trae Young: A

This postseason was the coming-out party for Trae Young on a national stage. He will be forever compared to Luka Doncic because the Atlanta Hawks traded back and chose Young. For the first time in their careers, Young has something one Doncic that brought this grading that much closer.

As great as Doncic is he has yet to win a playoff series. Young went into Madison Square Garden, knocked off the New York Knicks and took a bow. The run through the playoffs changed the entire story for Young.

Young averaged 28.8 points, 9.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game in his inaugural trip to the playoffs. Had he not stepped on a referee’s foot there was a real chance Young was going to push the Hawks to the NBA Finals.

The jury is likely to remain out on the trade throughout their entire careers. Young and Doncic are that good and will be fixtures in the league for years to come. Young is a showman and a star. He showed under Nate McMillan that he can lead a team on a deep playoff run. After missing the All-Star game this season it is hard to imagine him missing again for the foreseeable future. The Atlanta Hawks have a star (in talent and personality) for the first time in decades.
