Denver Nuggets offseason move No. 4: Extend Michael Porter Jr.

When Michael Porter Jr. was taken with the 14th pick in the 2018 NBA draft he had a lot of question marks about his health. Teams were concerned about his ability to perform in the NBA due to his back issues. Well, Porter missed his entire rookie season due to these injuries so this could have left the 13 front offices who passed on him looking wise.

However, once Porter overcame this injury he showed the skills that had him ranked so highly on many early draft boards. Due to lack of opportunity in his rookie season, Porter only averaged 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 16.4 minutes per game. However, he hit his 3-point shots at 42.2 percent which is impressive.

Last season Porter was unleashed. There were no questions about his health and he just balled out. He filled up the box score with 19.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.9 blocks, and 0.7 steals in 31.3 minutes per game. He even improved his 3-point shooting, making 44.5 percent of his looks from behind the arc.

Porter has shown that he is going to be a very good player in the NBA and the Nuggets do not want to lose him. The Nuggets will have a large amount of cap space in the 2022-23 season and Porter should be offered very close to the rookie max extension. He is the future of this franchise and the Nuggets need to ensure he stays around.
