Memphis Grizzlies offseason move No. 5: Find value in the draft

The Grizzlies have the 17th pick in the upcoming 2021 NBA draft. Fortunately for all the teams who are in the second half of the first round, this is a very deep draft. There has been great value at this pick throughout the 30 plus years.

Arguably the best player taken with the 17th pick of the draft was Shawn Kemp who was taken back in 1989. Then, in 2004, the Atlanta Hawks selected Josh Smith who had a tremendous career as a role player.

In 2009 the Philadelphia 76ers selected the extremely talented Jrue Holiday and Dennis Schroeder was taken again by the Atlanta Hawks. In the last couple of seasons, the talents of Donte DiVincenzo and Nickeil Alexander-Walker were discovered at this pick.

As shown by the trade for Bane, the Grizzlies have the ability to spot talent which is going to help their franchise. Having the 17th pick should be no barrier to them selecting a player who will help move their franchise forward.

They do have the option of trading this pick with a player to try and move up the draft order. The Grizzlies could attach it to a player in order to get another solid veteran. Due to the growth potential of the players currently on the roster the Grizzlies have some good options with this pick.
