Memphis Grizzlies offseason move No. 1: Do not pick up Justise Winslow’s team option

After spending six seasons in the league, Justise Winslow‘s time as a well-paid player is almost finished due to the fact that he has missed the vast majority of three of these seasons with injury. Winslow just finished the second year of his three-year, $39.0 million contract.

In the past two years, Winslow has only played 37 games, 11 with the Miami Heat and 26 with the Grizzlies. This means that Winslow has been paid 0.7 million per game which is excessive for a player whose production has declined the way that it has.

When he was at his best, Winslow was a tremendous point forward, running the offense for the Heat when he was healthy. However, looking at the last two years, Winslows has been inefficient and a shadow of his most productive years. His percentages from deep were 22.2 percent in his final season with the Heat and then 18.5 percent last season.

Fortunately for the Grizzlies the last $13 million of Winslow’s contract is a team option. They need to decline this option and use this money to sign a player or two who is going to improve the franchise’s chances of making a deep playoff run.
