Washington Wizards: 5 offseason roster moves they need to make
Washington Wizards offseason move No. 3: Guarantee Daniel Gafford
After spending a season and a half with the Chicago Bulls, Daniel Gafford found a home with the Washington Wizards. He slipped into a role and really helped the club move forward given the injury issues the Wizards had at the center position.
Gafford only averaged 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in 13.4 minutes per game for the Bulls. For the Wizards Gafford averaged 10.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 17.7 minutes per game. His shots per game went from 3.0 with the Bulls to 6.0 with the Wizards.
Gafford’s role was to work hard on the boards and finish with efficiency at the rim. He worked incredibly hard on the offensive glass, collecting 2.2 per game which is impressive given the low minutes he played. He also shot the ball at 68.1 percent from the floor.
The Wizards were a playoff team last season, but they were never going to contend for the finals. His minimum salary of $1.8 million will help keep the Wizards below the luxury tax apron. No owner wants to pay this for a middle-of-the-road team. Gafford is going to improve given that he is only 22, the Wizards are onto a good thing.
