Pistons: Drafting Cade Cunningham, and a couple other offseason goals
By Duncan Smith
Offseason goals for the Pistons: 3. Re-sign Hamidou Diallo
The Pistons made a trade deadline deal with the OKC Thunder to bring Hamidou Diallo to the Motor City, and in so doing made an implied commitment to re-sign him in restricted free agency.
He will have suitors, thanks in no small part to how well he played in his time with the Pistons after the trade, so there’s no reason to expect he’ll be given a generous discount to his new hometown team. James Edwards III of The Athletic (paywall) posits that the final number that all parties agree to might be somewhere in the three-year, $33 million range, and I think that sounds just about right for Diallo in this situation.
Re-signing him will make Josh Jackson redundant, but it’s important to note that he can’t be re-signed until after the draft, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jackson moved in a draft-day trade. If the Pistons do trade Jackson on draft day, write it in stone that Diallo will get that contract (or something similar to it).
Diallo could find himself flourishing in a bench role alongside talented playmakers like Cade Cunningham and Killian Hayes, so the future should be bright for him in Detroit.
