Pistons: Drafting Cade Cunningham, and a couple other offseason goals
By Duncan Smith
The Detroit Pistons have a new lease on life since getting the first overall pick in next week’s NBA draft and winning the presumptive Cade Cunningham sweepstakes.
Their trajectory was favorable even if they had to settle for a regular old high-lottery pick, but getting the No. 1 pick jumpstarted their rebuild. Now that they’re coming back from one of the worst records in franchise history at 20-52, every decision general manager Troy Weaver makes will have heightened importance.
Let’s take a look at the three primary goals the Pistons should have going into this critical 2021 offseason.
Offseason goals for the Pistons: 1. Draft Cade Cunningham
Obviously. Keep the main thing the main thing, as the saying goes. Cunningham should be the best player in a very good draft class, and there’s no reason to deviate from this easy decision.
Much of the buzz about a trade of the first overall pick can be traced back to a handful of things:
- The Pistons haven’t confirmed that they’ll select Cunningham, which is normal for a team holding the top pick.
- The Houston Rockets have shown a desperate level of interest in getting that pick and drafting Cunningham themselves, but even they seem to see the writing on the wall lately.
- NBA fans are insane, and we in the media benefit from fueling them.
Cunningham was in Detroit on Monday for pre-draft workouts with the Pistons, and they’re the only team he plans to work out for. He also attended a Detroit Tigers game (the surging Tigers, I might add) and was serenaded by the chants of “We want Cade” from the fans in attendance.

He’s the best player, the Pistons are lined up to get him, and their fans already adore him.
