Philadelphia 76ers move to make No. 4: Find a center with range on his shot

The 76ers signed Dwight Howard in the offseason to a one-year deal. Howard was fresh off winning the championship with the Los Angeles Lakers and the 76ers offered him a good chance of repeating. At the end of a player’s career, they want to play for the teams most likely to add to their legacy.

Howard will go down in history as one of the greatest centers of his generation. The problem is that the game has moved on from the big man whose only domain is the paint. Howard took 67 percent of his shots from within three feet last season which is not good for floor spacing in a pace and space league.

The problem is that Howard is not getting any younger. He is still a big man but his athleticism is starting to desert him. He was outplayed by the Hawks rookie Onyeka Okongwu in the Eastern Conference semifinals. He had four games where he had a negative impact on the box score, including two games where he was minus 14 and minus 15.

The problem is that the 76ers can’t have a big man with no range on the floor at the same time as Ben Simmons due to lack of spacing. On top of that, the 76ers have to change their whole style of play as Embiid can help space the floor which can have a detrimental impact on games.
