The Miami Heat had a rapid fall from grace. They went from runners-up in the 2019-20 season to being swept in the first round of the playoffs this season by the Milwaukee Bucks. While this does happen, it is not normal for a team to have such a great drop in performance.

There were some minor differences in the Heat‘s roster this season with Jae Crowder and Solomon Hill, James Johnson, and Kelly Olynyk all playing elsewhere when the playoffs rolled around this season. However, there was one other aspect that may have had an impact on the team.

The Heat benefitted from the bubble scenario more than most. They got comfortable and they knew what to expect. They have one of the best coaches in the business in Eric Spoelstra who prepared them for the games. He did not have to worry about how a young team will deal with the travel and crowds usually associated with playoff basketball.

The Miami Heat tried to make mid-season moves to help their postseason.

The Heat traded Meyers Leonard to the OKC Thunder for Trevor Ariza after Leonard’s online racial slur went public. This move worked for the Heat as Ariza played good, solid basketball. 10 days later they then traded Maurice Harkless and Chris Silva to the Sacramento Kings for Nemanja Bjelica.

Their big splash was when they sent Olynyk and Avery Bradley to the Houston Rockets, receiving Victor Oladipo in return. While this trade looks really good on paper, Oladipo’s injury curse struck, meaning he would only play four games for the franchise. Now, let’s look at the five roster moves the Miami Heat needs to make.
