NBA Draft: Pro comparisons for the top 30 prospects in 2021
2021 NBA Draft: 22. Ayo Dosunmu compares to Terry Rozier
Gone are the days of past first point guards who look to get their teammates involved early. Now, primary ball handlers would much rather look for their own.
Coming right out of that school of thinking and projected to be a perfect fit in today’s NBA world, is Ayo Dosunmu. During his three years at Illinois, the score first guard developed his game relentlessly. Over the last three seasons, Dosunmu increased his field goal percentage, free throws percentage and scoring average.
This past season, Dosunmu developed into a deadly 3-point shooter, knocking in 39% on average. In an effort to show teams that the ball doesn’t stick with him, Dosunmu improved his court vision. The third-year player averaged a career-high 5.3 assists per game.
Dosunmu is cut from the same cloth as Terry Rozier. The Charlotte Hornets guard was considered the team’s point guard of the future. That is, until they realized that he simply doesn’t pass often. He’s since slid over to the shooting guard position and recently drafted LaMelo Ball runs the team. Dosunmu will be much of the same, don’t anticipate high assist games or ball movement once he’s in the game. Fans can, however, expect him to light opposing teams on fire on offense.
