2021 NBA Draft: 18. Franz Wagner compares to Nicolas Batum

When it comes to drafting NBA players, most have mastered at least one skill. Whether it be shooting, defending, playmaking or something else entirely, most young players enter the league with at least one skill that they have somewhat mastered. Yet, when it comes to former Michigan forward Franz Wagner, his level of expertise comes in many forms.

Ultimately, his two years in Michigan highlighted his overall skills. Wagner dropped 12 a game across two seasons, provided solid rebounding and a decent amount of assists. His 32.5% from distance needs a bit of work at the next level but he’s shown the capability to hit them. Standing at 6’9, Wagner is also a solid defender. In his final year in the unpaid ranks, he stole the ball 1.3 times a game and registered one block on a nightly basis. His overall versatility on both sides of the ball closely mirrors that of Nicolas Batum.

Before he was castigated and essentially discarded by the Charlotte Hornets, Batum was used all over the court. He could initiate the offense, hit timely shots and guard the opposing team’s best player. A ball club looking for a secondary ball handler would suit him best. He’ll never lead the league in scoring but he’ll be able to affect multiple parts of the game like a young Nicolas Batum.
