Golden State Warriors offseason roster move No. 3: Do not guarantee Alen Smailagic

While Alen Smailagic was in his first year, he only averaged 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds in 5.6 minutes per game that he played. There is usually room for improvement when a player has only completed one season.

However, in this case, the Warriors are straight back into win-now mode with the return of Thompson and cannot afford to have any passengers on their books. As a power forward, Smailagic is a decent size at 6’10”. However, he never seemed capable of using that size.

While the Warriors have no wiggle room at all with their salary cap situation, even paying $1.7 million to Smailgic next season is not going to help them. The Warriors have two lottery picks in the upcoming NBA draft which is reportedly has a very deep pool of talent.

They are going to need to free up some roster spots for the incoming players and Samilgic simply does not have the potential to keep one of these players out of the squad. The Warriors also could fill this roster spot with another veteran or an undrafted player who may help the team.
