Charlotte Hornets offseason roster move No. 4: Pursue Nerlens Noel

The Hornets are a reasonable defensive outfit in the right circumstances. They play more zone than most NBA teams last season and part of that was due to a lack of a truly defensive center. Bismack Biyombo tries really hard but his lack of offense is a problem.

Cody Zeller is solid, good with the fundamentals, but he is not a true rim protector who can change the way that a team plays. This is where getting a rim protector like Nerlens Noel would make a massive difference for this team.

The Hornets gave up the worst 2-point field goal percentage in the entire league last year. On top of that, they gave up the most 3-point field goal attempts in the league due to the zone, holding their opponents to the 17th best rate of 36.6 percent. A good defensive pivot can fix both of these issues.

A center like Noel can call out where his perimeter men need to move to and if they are beaten, he can take over the defensive assignment. This allows their defense to move up a little closer to the 3-point line, putting more pressure on the shooter. Noel has also signed a series of small contracts so is a good chance of not costing the Hornets huge money.
