Charlotte Hornets offseason roster move No. 1: Do not guarantee Caleb Martin

The Hornets signed Caleb Martin to a three-year partially guaranteed contract back in 2019. This looked like a really good move in his rookie year when Martin spaced the floor when he was on, shooting an insane 54.1 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Then he came crashing back down to earth last season where he shot the long ball at 24.8 percent. He found his role decreased slightly with the addition of both Hayward and Ball but that does not explain his lack of efficiency on offense.

The problem is that the Hornets have two Martins on the team and both of them struggled last season with their shooting. Cody Martin has the job of a guaranteed contract so the Hornets would hardly want to waive him. This would be another $.17 million added to the $9.0 million they already have in dead salary for next season thanks to the Batum contract being stretched.

The Hornets are still a number of pieces away from being able to challenge for the top of the Eastern Conference. Giving this roster spot to a player who could make a bigger difference than Caleb Martin would be a good move to make.
