Mock NBA Draft 5.0: Post-combine shake-up clarifies the league
By Corey Rausch
Rough luck on lottery night for the OKC Thunder turns into a win on draft night if they land Scottie Barnes. There is a chance he ends up going higher on draft night because his defensive potential and playmaking prowess truly sets him apart, as does his wingspan. He is a work in progress as a scorer, but the Thunder have nothing but time on their hands.
With the addition of Kenny Atkinson to the coaching staff, player development is becoming more of a focus for the Golden State Warriors. Still, the time is not to add someone who can contribute. They can do that with their next pick. But for now, Moses Moody has too much potential to pass on. He has everything you want in an elite two-way wing but is not quite a primary scoring threat. He would fit in perfectly.
With their second top 10 pick, the Magic bring in Jalen Johnson. There are obvious question marks surrounding him but the potential is clear. He is a great playmaker for his position and excels in transition. If the Magic hire the right coach they could unlock a true star if they are willing to put in the time. The Magic have nothing but time, so investing some in an elite prospect is a no-brainer.
As long as the Sacramento Kings pretend they have a chance at making a playoff push, adding a player who is ready to compete to push them there makes sense. Franz Wagner is a knockdown shooter and elite defender. The defense has been less than a priority for the Kings but Wagner could help them change that. He would clearly benefit from the looks
Pairing Corey Kispert with the New Orleans Pelicans has made sense for months. They need his shooting and he is immediately ready to step in and compete with a roster hoping to make the playoffs this coming season. The biggest issue the Pelicans offense had throughout the season was shooting. Kispert immediately changes that. He cannot fix all ills on the roster, but it is a start.
