San Antonio Spurs: 5 offseason roster moves they need to make
San Antonio Spurs offseason roster move No. 4: Find some more bench scoring
The Spurs have had a strong bench unit for the time of their most successful period. It did not hurt to have Manu Ginobili play alongside Mills during this time. During their championship years, they also had players like Morco Bellineli who could shoot the basketball when he came off the bench.
At the moment the two bench leaders are Rudy Gay and Mills. The Australian, Mills is older and wiser, and can still shoot the ball really well. He averaged 10.8 points per game last season. Gay was a little better, averaging 11.4 points per game. These two players were the best 3-point shooter on the squad as well.
The problem is that there is not too much firepower behind these two on the bench. Devin Vassell gets a leave pass due to being a rookie. He should average more than 5.5 points per game next season. Drew Eubanks was the only other player to score more than Vassell from the bench not named Mills or Gay, averaging 5.8 points per game.
Signing one or two more players who can average even seven or eight points per game to go along with the current bench scoring will benefit the Spurs no end. This will mean that the offense will not almost stop when the starters sit down.
