San Antonio Spurs: 5 offseason roster moves they need to make
San Antonio Spurs offseason roster move No. 3: Extend Lonnie Walker
Since the day that the Spurs drafted Lonnie Walker, he has done everything he could to grow. He missed a large chunk of his rookie season through injury, only playing 17 games and averaging 2.6 points to go along with 1.0 rebounds per game.
In his second season, Walker had the numbers that would have been expected during his rookie year. He played 61 games, averaging 6.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 16.2 minutes per game. This showed a level of growth that would have been encouraging for the Spurs coaching staff.
Then, last season, Walker broke out and played really well. He only played 60 games again but was able to average 11.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 25.4 minutes per game. He averaged 4.7 attempts from the perimeter per game which is way up on last season where he averaged 1.7 per game. He shot the ball at 35.5 percent from that distance which bodes well for the future.
Walker is a key piece for the future of the Spurs and will continue to grow along with the rest of the young Spurs core. He should not get the maximum deal as he is not a max-type player but locking him up for an extended period will help the Spurs in their rebuild.
