Sacramento Kings offseason roster move No. 3: Extend Delon Wright

When the Kings traded for Wright they ended up on the correct side of a trade. It cost them two future second-round picks but they also got Joseph’s $12.6 million of salary off their books next year. The Kings upgraded their backup guard position, as well as giving the Kings $4 million of cap space flexibility.

This has been an issue for the Kings since they re-signed Harrison Barnes. It was a contributing factor in their ability to keepBogdan Bogdanovic last offseason. He was going to require a large contract to keep him and that would have made their cap space even more inflexible.

By extending Wright, they get some longer-term security in the guard rotation. De’Aaron Fox is the franchise player and will also be the starting point guard unless he gets injured. Wright rarely turns the ball over and has a steady hand running the offense, helping give rookie Haliburton time to develop without as much pressure.

For the Kings to break their playoff drought, they are going to need to make these long-term signings that back up their stars. They have three of their four main core pieces locked up for another three seasons. This will help build up the chemistry that leads to winning basketball. Their bench general is another key piece.
