Toronto Raptors offseason roster move No. 4: Do not pick up Aron Baynes’ team option

As an attempt to replace the defense of both Ibaka and Gasol, the Raptors signed Alex Len and Aron Baynes in the offseason. It did not take long for the franchise to realize that they had made a mistake, cutting Len at the earliest possible opportunity.

They persevered with Baynes because of his potential ability to space the floor and also his sheer presence at both ends of the court. He is not the biggest body in the NBA but most teammates who play with Baynes know that they will be backed up should any other team try and bully them.

However, the problem is that Baynes is due $7.3 million which is a lot of money for a player who is only averaging 6.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Even his shooting from deep went down, only making 26.2 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.

If the Raptors take his contract off the books, then they may have a chance to sign a big name or trade for a player who is going to make a difference to their fortunes. If they add this cap room with the next roster move then they might be able to sign two big names.
