Minnesota Timberwolves offseason roster move No. 2: Move on from Ed Davis

One of the more unheralded moves from the offseason was the Timberwolves trading Evans and Spellman to the New York Knicks. In return, they received center Ed Davis. The reason it was unheralded is that it was the move that almost moved the needle backward for the Timberwolves.

Davis only played 23 games, starting seven of them. The 10-year veteran averaged 2.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 13.0 minutes per game. For a player who did not attempt a 3-point shot, 43.2 percent from the floor is not good enough.

Davis is also 32 which is the wrong age for the rebuild. Yes Ricky Rubio is 30 but he has a role to play on the team, Davis does not.  He was paid $5.0 million last season and will not get that in this free agency, despite the salary cap room most teams have.

The Timberwolves need to sign a player who is going to be a lot more productive at a veteran’s minimum or use this roster spot on a player that is undrafted. If they find a diamond in the rough by doing this, then they will be in a much better place to challenge for a playoff spot in the coming seasons.
