NBA Draft: Regrading all 30 teams for the 2020 NBA Draft
Regrading all 30 teams for the 2020 NBA Draft: C+ Grades
Toronto Raptors: C+
Malachi Flynn, 29; Jalen Harris, 59
The expected return on a late first-round pick is not particularly high, and the Toronto Raptors look like they’ve walked away with a point guard who can serve as a reasonable backup moving forward. That’s fine, if unexciting. Their very late second-rounder Jalen Harris barely played this season but his points-per-minute were exceptional as he can fill it up and might become something one day.
Detroit Pistons: C+
Killian Hayes, 7; Isaiah Stewart, 16; Saddiq Bey, 19; Saben Lee, 38
The Detroit Pistons have a case to be graded much higher than a C+, or right about average. They came away with one of the ten best players in the draft in Saddiq Bey, a serviceable big man who projects as a starter in Isaiah Stewart, and a pair of guards who could one day be more.
Part of the reason their draft looks good is that they had three first-round picks in the top-19, something they don’t get credit for here. And after one season Killian Hayes’ value has dropped significantly; there are plenty who still believe, but his rookie season just flaunted the concerns many had and didn’t do much to show off his strengths.
The reality of what the Detroit Pistons could have had is palpable and hurts their grade as well. Without applying too much revisionist history, they could easily have taken Tyrese Haliburton at seven, juicing their rebuild with a blue-chip talent, then taken Bey and another wing like Desmond Bane (or perhaps even Stewart still). Add in Paul Reed at 38 and they could have had a grand slam. Their draft was good, and if Hayes rebounds their grade will too, but the aroma of a what-if scenario with Haliburton and Cade Cunningham in the backcourt just won’t go away.
Chicago Bulls: C+
Patrick Williams, 4; Marko Simonovic, 44
In the 2020 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls selected Patrick Williams fourth overall out of Florida State. In the 2020 NBA redraft just conducted, the Chicago Bulls selected….Patrick Williams fourth overall. The upside of the big forward is still there, but he’s also not a slam dunk pick as there is a significant tier drop-off between three and four. Simonovic has not yet played in the NBA.
