NBA Draft: LaMelo Ball goes first in 2020 NBA Redraft
Tyrese Maxey is a difficult player to place in the 2020 NBA redraft. He originally went 21st to the Philadelphia 76ers, who were (and are) hoping they found their point guard of the future. A season later, it appears that Maxey’s Kentucky teammate Immanuel Quickley is the better bet to hit that upside.
The question becomes what Maxey’s upside still is. He can create with the basketball in his hands and isn’t afraid to take tough shots, which can be a positive and a negative depending on the context. He shot just 46.2 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from 3-point range, both really tough numbers for a lead ball-handler.
Maxey was forced to try and make something happen with the ball on bench units often featuring two or three non-shooters around him. In a better ecosystem, perhaps even as soon as next year’s 76ers rotation, he might have more room to work with and bring back better numbers.
Maxey competed on defense and is a reasonably strong passer. His shot looks good and he hit 87.1 percent from the stripe, so he could still grow into a good shooter. A point guard without a shot is a rare creature in today’s NBA; he most likely will need to hit from outside at a reasonable clip to be more than an end-of-roster guard down the line.
