NBA: The 30 most unforgettable individual playoff runs: 14. Kevin Garnett (2004)
Before Kevin Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics, won a championship on this generation’s first super team and yelled “Anything is possible” he was a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves and carried the team on one of the most memorable runs in the early 2000s. Garnett was the MVP of the season and led the Timberwolves into a commanding position in the playoffs, somewhere they are certainly not accustomed to being.
Over the course of the playoffs, Garnett averaged 24.3 points, 14.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. He was a two-way force and pushed the Timberwolves all the way to the Conference Finals, the only time in history the franchise has made it that far.
In the first round, the Denver Nuggets of Carmelo Anthony had no answer to the force of Garnett. He grabbed 20 or more rebounds in each of the first two games and scored at least 20 points in each game. Next came the Sacramento Kings, who presented a slightly stiffer challenge, pushing the Wolves to seven games. Again, Garnett had multiple 20 plus rebound games and was able to inch past their Conference rival.
The Lakers were just too much for the Wolves to handle. Even as they were fraying at the seams, that would not come back to bite them until the Finals. Garnett did everything he could, averaging 23.7 points, 13.5 points, 4.5 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.2 steals per game in the six-game series. He would eventually get his revenge in his next playoff appearance, four years later with the Celtics.
