The Chicago Bulls should trade for Kemba Walker in the offseason
Why the Chicago Bulls should trade for Kemba Walker: Extension of the coach
In basketball, there’s an old saying that the point guard is an extension of the coach on the floor. Magic Johnson executed Pat Riley’s plan for the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers to perfection. John Stockton made Jerry Sloan’s vision for the Utah Jazz a reality. The great point guards are viewed as the player the coach trusts the most and knows what’s best for his teammates at all times.
During the 2011 NCAA Tournament, Kemba Walker was certainly an extension of head coach Jim Calhoun’s vision for the UConn Huskies. Not only was Walker’s play dynamic, but it led to the best possible result; a run to the Final Four culminated by a National Championship game victory. Walker was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan knows what it’s like to have a point guard he can fully trust. During his last season with the OKC Thunder, Donovan was gifted aging superstar Chris Paul. With a young roster that had been depleted by injuries and trades, most pundits thought the Thunder were headed for the lottery. However, with CP3’s leadership, the team not only made the playoffs but also pushed the heavily favored Houston Rockets to seven games in their first-round matchup.
If the Bulls are able to bring Walker into the fold, he will have them running like a well-oiled machine. That’s exactly what Billy Donovan wants to see.
