New York Knicks: The cons of signing Kelly Oubre in 2021 NBA free agency

While Oubre could be a desirable name for the New York Knicks to target in free agency, he also comes with his share of potential risks that are worth considering.

For instance, the biggest reason why Reggie Bullock thrived for the Knicks this season was his ability to space the floor and consistently knock down shots behind the arc at a high clip. Unfortunately, with Oubre, outside shooting is far from his strongest attribute as he has shot just 32.6 percent on 3.9 attempts from long range over his ongoing six-year career. That included an abysmal showing with Golden State this year as he shot just 31.6 percent on 5.2 attempts across 55 total games, starting the season off just 2-for-30 from deep.

Furthermore, there is some controversy regarding how much money he could earn on his upcoming deal. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, a source says that Oubre and his camp believe he can ink a long-term deal in free agency worth beyond $20 million annually. That potential asking price will undoubtedly rub potential suitors the wrong way if he stands firm for such a deal. Although the Knicks do indeed have a massive amount of cap space to work with, Oubre’s asking price might even be too stiff for them.

With a lackluster outside shot and desire to sign a hefty new contract, it would be fair for the Knicks to ultimately skip out on Oubre. While the team needs to find answers at the small forward position, this might not be the best move on the table, despite the potential upside he could provide. Time will tell just how much the Knicks like Oubre heading into free agency with both sides reportedly eyeing each other.
