The Houston Rockets have had one of their worst seasons on record. In fact, only their inaugural season as the San Diego Rockets back in 1967-68 and the 1982-83 season as the Houston Rockets were worse for the franchise when they were not able to win even 20 percent of their games.

Their poor record in 1982-83 allowed them to draft Ralph Sampson in one year and then Hakeem Olajuwon the year later. The poor record in 1967-68 allowed them to select Elvin Hayes. If the draft lottery falls in their favor they will have a chance to select another future Hall of Fame player.

The problem for the Rockets is that they have the potential to lose the pick to the OKC Thunder if it falls outside the protections they put on it where it is 1-4 protected. Currently, thanks to the worst record in the league, the Rockets currently have the first pick in the draft, pending the results of the lottery.

Why the Houston Rockets are in this position.

The Rockets lost their head coach Mike D’Antoni at the end of last season., They replaced him with Stephen Silas, who, through no fault of his own, Silas lost most of the team’s best players. The team did manage to acquire Christian Wood, and they made the most of losing Russell Westbrook by trading for John Wall.

The Rockets then changed the face of the NBA when they traded James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets after their centerpiece demanded a trade. The Rockets received Victor Oladipo, Dante Exum, Rodions Kurucs, and seven future first-round draft picks. They made several other moves but obviously none as big as the Harden trade.

With all that in mind, let’s look at five roster moves the Houston Rockets need to make in the coming offseason.
