Brad Stevens’ third task with the Boston Celtics: Prepare for the NBA draft

Brad Stevens has a college background, having jumped from Butler University to the pros with the Celtics, but he’s going to be going into this NBA draft class cold. Considering all his own energies have been put into this season for the team he coached, he’s going to be playing catch-up.

Stevens may also have to make some decisions about the Celtics’ scouts. If that’s the case, turnover this close to the draft may stunt their approach and put them behind the curve relative to other teams that have had their draft apparatus in place.

Under his predecessor, Danny Ainge, the Celtics got some monstrous hits in the draft like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but they also had middling results in other classes. Perhaps most damning for Ainge was an unwillingness to pull the trigger on trade opportunities that allegedly presented themselves, particularly as pertained to the historic haul of draft assets they received from the Nets.

Ainge was an overall success with the NBA draft, and in order to get the Boston Celtics back on top, Brad Stevens will have to be as well.
