Brad Stevens’ first task with the Boston Celtics: Pick a head coach

Now that Stevens has departed the sideline for the suite, there’s a head coaching vacancy in Boston. After years of being the reason that coaching was an advantage for the Celtics in most matchups, now he’ll be responsible for finding the franchise’s next head coach.

First things first, it’s important that he avoids some possible pitfalls. Names like Jason Kidd and Lloyd Pierce have already made their way into the mix, as is tradition (with Kidd at least), and with the talented group of up-and-coming coaches available to them, it would be a shame if the Celtics went down this road of coaches who had their shot and missed badly.

On the other hand, Chauncey Billups is already rumored to be in the running for the job, and proven coaches like David Vanterpool and Nate McMillan (if the Celtics can pry him away from the Atlanta Hawks) could be top-tier targets.

Ultimately, this could be the decision that either fast-tracks the Celtics into their next era of success, or stunts their short-term growth. It’s important that Stevens gets this task right, but it might be part of the job he’s best suited for.
