Veteran trade No. 2 for the Houston Rockets: D.J. Augustin

There is going to be a theme to this piece, and it is old players with bad contracts need to go in order for the Houston Rockets to completely begin their rebuild.

Now bringing D.J. Augustin back to the Houston area was a great story, as he played in Missouri City, Texas his senior year of high school following Hurricane Katrina. As great of a story it is, basketball is a business, not a fairy tale.

Augustin is on the wrong side of 30, he will be turning 34 around the time of tip-off next season, and while he played well for the Rockets in 2020, it most likely won’t last for much longer. Similar to Eric Gordon, Augustin has more value elsewhere than he does as a member of the Rockets. A team that is looking to compete for a playoff spot or a title has more use for Augustin and will give him a better chance to win games than he will get in Houston.

Augustin’s contract isn’t terrible, it’s just not what the Rockets need on the books this season. It should be easy enough to offload for young talent or future draft picks.
