Worst NBA draft pick Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Scott Layden has made: Justin Patton

The Minnesota Timberwolves are currently without a general manager. Scott Layden is the most recent person to hold the position, being let go after the 2020 Draft and therefore is the track record to be examined here. Layden held the position from April 2016 until December 2020. While we have been looking at what the GMs have done in previous stops, given the uniqueness of this situation we are only looking at his time with the Timberwolves.

In just four seasons with the team, Layden made plenty of questionable selections. These include Kris Dunn, Justin Patton, Josh Okogie and Jarrett Culver with first-round picks. Of this illustrious group, Patton has been the worst. Over the course of four seasons, he has played for your teams for a total of 22 games.

Patton’s career has been completely sidetracked by injuries, limiting the potential that he had the chance to realize on the rare Minnesota team that made the postseason. He played just one single game for the Timberwolves. After one season he was traded alongside Jimmy Butler again, this time to the Philadelphia 76ers. He would appear in just three games over five months before being waived again. Patton has played well in the G-League, showing hopes that if he could stay healthy perhaps he will one day realize the potential that saw Layden draft him 16th overall.
