Worst NBA draft pick LA Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has made: Moritz Wagner

Rob Pelinka has grown into one of the best executives in the league, building a championship core around Anthony Davis and LeBron James in back-to-back seasons. He has found a way to make the most of almost every roster transaction since he has come on. However, it is hard not to imagine how things may have been different if he had selected someone other than Moritz Wagner in the first round in 2018.

Sure, the Lakers had to dump Wagner’s salary after his rookie season but if the selection had been a better one they would have found a way to keep him on board. Landry Shamet, Robert Williams Jalen Brunson and Mitchell Robinson, among others, would have all worked out much better. In 43 games as a rookie, Wagner appeared in 43 of them and averaged just 4.8 points and 2.0 rebounds.

He was slightly better in his one full season with the Washington Wizards, where he was salary dumped as a sophomore. Wagner saw his minutes increase to 18.6 per game and his averages jump to 8.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. This season, he has played for the Wizards, Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic.
