Dennis Schroder could earn a big payday with the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs
Another guard reportedly mentioned in trade discussions for Kyle Lowry, Dennis Schröder’s future with the Lakers is currently up in the air beyond this season.
Slated to hit unrestricted free agency after the season, the Lakers reportedly tried to lock in Schröder for the long-haul previously by offering him a four-year extension worth $84 million. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on a previous episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, the 27-year-old guard rejected the offer and will seemingly keep his options open with a rather lackluster free agent class looming.
Betting on himself, Schröder certainly believes that he can set himself up for a bigger payday with a strong finish to the season. His season has currently been put on pause since May 2 after entering the league’s health and safety protocols, but it seems safe to say that he will be back in the fold for the postseason/play-in tournament. That is where Schröder will make his money, particularly if he can live up to the billing of being that third star alongside James and Davis.
Averaging 15.5 points on a .438/.335/.844 slash line, 3.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game this season, Schröder’s numbers are serviceable as a starting guard. However, the Lakers could justifiably be hesitant to hand the 27-year-old a massive extension unless he helps pave the way in their quest for another title.
